In the northern Malabar region of Kerala, people do not usually have a surname. However they put the first letter of their House-name at the end of their name to help identify themselves. While applying for passport, visa or other official document, people in this area use their House-name for their family name. Kutuvantavida is very common in the Nadapuram area of Kozhikode district in Kerala.

In the colonial era of India, Kutuvantavida was known as "Vadakke Kalariparambath" in the North in Malayalam "vadakk" =North Kalariparambath. As the name Kalariparambath Vadakke changed to Kutuvantavida remains a complex issue among regional historians. However, there is strong evidence for Kutuvantavida was known as Vadakke Kalariparambath, as even now all the documents, the company, the name still Kalaripparambath Vadakke.
